User Research Summary

Through a comprehensive survey, I conducted user research to evaluate the needs and preferences regarding a skincare ingredients checker application. The primary objective was to understand how users interact with skincare product information and identify suitable solutions for their specific needs.

The research findings demonstrated that participants consistently experience difficulty interpreting complex ingredient lists, which impedes their ability to make well-informed skincare decisions. In response, we developed a specialized tool designed to enhance users' understanding of skincare ingredients, enabling them to make more informed choices for optimal skin health.

  1. Financial

After thoroughly evaluating the research findings, I identified several pain points that contribute to users finding it challenging to understand and select skincare products, which can be both time-consuming and hassle. However, I believe the two most critical pain points that warrant highlighting are:

Competitive Analysis

After gaining deeper insights into the skincare industry, I analyzed Skinalysis' competitors to understand how they assist users in evaluating skincare products. Through market research, I identified key direct and indirect competitors: Cosmily, Skinsort, and INCIDecoder. While direct competitors focus on ingredient analysis and product comparisons, indirect competitors provide broader skincare guidance without detailed breakdowns

By reviewing each competitor’s platform, I assessed their strengths and weaknesses to uncover opportunities where Skinalysis can differentiate itself.

Pain Points

Utilizing insights from user research I developed a user persona that represents the ideal application of users using the insights from the user research. The persona gave me a thorough understanding of the users' goals, frustrations, and personality, which helped me come up with a better solution.

Information Architecture

Information Architecture (IA) focuses on the organization of information within the application.

I did some quick ideation and created paper wireframes to address key improvement form the competitor analysis. My focus was specifically on skincare ingredient checker and creating skincare routine.

PROTOTYPE PHASE

Digital Wireframes

After brainstorming and sketching initial concepts, I developed the first designs for Skinalysis. The design prioritizes providing detailed skincare ingredient analysis, enabling users to better understand their products and make informed decisions for healthier skin.

I conducted the usability testing to figure out the main user experience of checking the skincare ingredients. I'd like to understand the challenges that users might encounter throughout the browsing process, checking the skincare ingredients, and creating skincare routine. I then gathered all the data from the study and come up with insights, which later helps to improve the design.

Insights & Design Iteration

I did some quick ideation and created paper wireframes to address key improvement form the competitor analysis. My focus was specifically on skincare ingredient checker and creating skincare routine.

Based on the insights I gathered from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a “back” button for the users to easily go to previous page.

Additional changes I made to the screen were by adding the "Menu Dot" option to the routine page. This change will allow users to have the option of either deleting or adding steps to their skincare routine.

After refining my design to enhance usability, I shifted focus to visually defining ‘Skinalysis' brand identity. Skinalysis embodies key attributes: trustworthy, insightful, modern, and user-friendly. I worked on establishing a visual direction that effectively conveys these qualities, ensuring a cohesive and engaging brand experience.

Branding

UI PHASE

Style Tile

After designing Skinalysis' logo, I moved on to finalizing its visual identity by creating a style tile. For Skinalysis' branding, I aimed to balance a modern-minimalist, trustworthy, and user-friendly aesthetic. The clean, minimal design ensures clarity, while the color palette is refreshing and approachable—reflecting the brand’s commitment to transparency and skincare education. Rounded elements add a sense of warmth and accessibility while maintaining a structured, professional feel.
